NJCAA Region 19 Prioritizes Student-Athlete Health and Safety Initiatives with U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health Partnership

New partnership delivers accessibility to athletic healthcare education, return to play guidance, and best practices.

NJCAA Region 19 has announced a partnership with the U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health (USCAH) to collaborate with Region 19 leadership and staff on athletic medicine and safety initiatives, especially as it relates to COVID-19 planning and responses at Region 19 member school and at Region 19 events.

USCAH will provide resources to Region 19 leadership to assist its response to the current health crisis and to support the Region 19 Return to Play Committee in their development of a comprehensive COVID Management Plan. Additionally, USCAH will provide education for Region 19 via webinar series and more throughout the length of the partnership.

NJCAA Region 19 becomes the first NJCAA region to enter into a strategic partnership with USCAH. The USCAH brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise that Region 19 leadership believes will be of value to all members throughout the current pandemic and beyond. The USCAH is currently working around the country with other organizations and is the official healthcare and safety consultant for the National Junior College Athletic Association. USCAH is also the official health and safety partner of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and has current partnerships with several NCAA conferences working on COVID-19 response and health and safety.

While the stated goal of the partnership is to get as many student-athletes safely in competition this spring, there are additional benefits to the region through the partnership.

“During the next few months, Region 19 will have the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Borchers and the medical experts at the USCAH on our COVID-19 planning which is the crucial piece at the moment,” commented RCSJ-Gloucester Director of Athletics Brian Rowan. “Region 19 will also benefit from the expertise of the USCAH on development of comprehensive plans for student-athlete physical and mental health, safety, and wellness as we navigate the post-COVID student-athlete experience.”

"The U.S. Council for Athletes' Health is excited for this new partnership to promote innovative COVID 19 programming for student-athletes, coaches and staff. We look forward to further collaborative health and safety initiatives with proactive programming designed to enhance the overall athletics experience," says James R. Borchers, MD, MPH, Co-Founder & President at USCAH. Borchers is also currently a member of the Big Ten Return to Competition Task Force.
