Toms River, NJ: Del Tech Outlasts Sussex to Capture the 2024 Region 19 Men's Lacrosse Championship

Delaware Technical Community College clinched the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 19 men's lacrosse championship in a nail-biting 13-12 showdown against Sussex County Community College (New Jersey) on April 24th at the DE Turf Sports Complex.

The game was a rollercoaster of lead changes, spectacular saves, and jaw-dropping behind-the-back goals, offering everything a lacrosse enthusiast could hope for. Yet, amidst the excitement, the bittersweet reality emerged that one team had to taste defeat.

Gabe Smith emerged as the shining star for Del Tech, driving the offense with a phenomenal nine-goal performance, sealing the deal with the game-winning shot mere seconds before regulation ended. Max Gray, Cameron Hellens, Dominic Hippler, and Shane Sylvester contributed with a goal each, solidifying Del Tech's victory.

On the opposing side, Sussex's senior captain Jeremiah Carfello etched his name in the school's record books, amassing an impressive 11 points and notching 9 goals in a single game. Alex Husenjnovic and Nate Melnick, the senior attack duo, combined for 8 crucial points for Sussex.

With the regional championship secured, both Delaware Tech and Sussex County Community College set their sights on the next challenge: the North Atlantic District Tournament, to be hosted by Nassau Community College in Uniondale, New York. Del Tech is slated to clash with College of DuPage in the second semifinal on Friday, April 26th at 4 p.m., while Sussex kicks off the tournament against Nassau at 1 p.m. The stage is set for an exhilarating showdown, with the semifinal winners advancing to the final match on Saturday, April 27th at 1 p.m.
