Brookdale Community College celebrated the 2013 National Champion women's soccer team on Sunday, September 28th with a presentation of championship rings. Nearly 100 family and community members, and dignitaries gathered at the Sterling Ballroom in the DoubleTree by Hilton Tinton Falls to honor the latest Brookdale Community College squad to earn a National title.
During her comments, head coach Katie Miller noted how she knew this team was going to achieve something special from the preseason workouts. "They had a determination and a drive that made me say to (assistant coach) Sara Shaughnessy, 'wow, we've got something going on here.'"
Equally as impressive to their on-the-field play, the squad received recognition for their work in the classroom. The team earned NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honors with a cumulative GPA of 3.3.
Additionally, Monmouth County Freeholder John Curley was on-hand to present each player with a certificate for extraordinary achievement.
The team finished with an overall record of 17-1-1 and defeated Mohawk Valley, 4-3, in the National title game. The women's soccer National title was the first in program history and the fifth overall for the department (softball – 2002, 2005 & 2010; men's basketball – 2013).
